New Work: Cucumaria

January 23, 2011 § 6 Comments

Cucumaria

Inspired by the touch pool on a trip to the Seattle Aquarium, this piece features cucumaria miniata (also known as the red sea cucumber).   I really enjoy the sea cucumber’s velvety texture and exterior body plan which looks so alien and abstract.

It initially seems like a stark contrast against the polyhedral shapes I’ve been recently studying, but sea cucumbers are technically echinoderms and exhibit the same pentagonal skeletal structure as their cousins the sea urchin.

Comments and feedback always welcome. Thanks for taking a minute to look!

A very very special thanks to everyone who came out to the opening yesterday!  It was lovely to see the other participating artists work, great to meet some new people, and fantastic to see so many familiar faces.

In case you missed it, the show will be on view until February 8th.

Assemble Gallery logo

This Will Be Our Year (Took a Long Time to Come) is a themed invitational exhibit based on The Zombies song of the same title. This show is unique, because unlike other group shows they kindly asked me to create new work specifically for the show (I hear this is common in LA).

There will be an opening during the Greenwood – Phinney Art Up Art Walk  on Friday, January 14th, 2011 6-9pm.  Assemble Gallery is located at 7406 Greenwood Avenue North | Seattle, Washington 98103.

Participating artists include:

Katya Usvitsky | Megan Canning| Grace Willard | Blair Stocker

Michele DeWilliam | Emily Baier | Caitlin Topham

If you can’t make the opening the show will be up through February 8th- hope to see you there!

If you’d like to receive a preview of the show sign up for my mailing list (emails are infrequent and I never share or sell your information) email with “Subscribe” in the subject line to gracewillard(at)gmail(dot)com.
