New Work: Cucumaria

January 23, 2011 § 6 Comments

Inspired by the touch pool on a trip to the Seattle Aquarium, this piece features cucumaria miniata (also known as the red sea cucumber).   I really enjoy the sea cucumber’s velvety texture and exterior body plan which looks so alien and abstract.

It initially seems like a stark contrast against the polyhedral shapes I’ve been recently studying, but sea cucumbers are technically echinoderms and exhibit the same pentagonal skeletal structure as their cousins the sea urchin.

Comments and feedback always welcome. Thanks for taking a minute to look!
